Facebook’s Getting a Facelift

Facebook’s getting a new name, and while it seems like a huge move for an established brand, it actually makes sense. The name “Facebook” arouses a truly mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, it can still be thought of as a convenient place to see what multi-level marketing scheme your high school crush is caught up in. On the other hand, it brings to mind misinformation and whistle-blowing scandals. Mark Zuckerberg realizes it’s finally time for a rebrand. The mysterious new name will try to position Facebook as a leader in the new generation of tech, with an emphasis on the burgeoning metaverse space. Metabook. There you go. Fixed it for you.

TikTok Debuts their Discover List

TikTok is highlighting the standout creators on their platform with a new feature called “The Discover List.” The list is broken down into 5 categories: Changemakers, Icons, Innovators, Foodies, and Originators. It’s a smart way to feature the people who make the app great. And, it’s a great tool for people unfamiliar with TikTok to get a sampling of the best of the best. Check out the full list here.

Turn of the Century Typefaces Take Over

Designers are turning the clock way back to look for typographical inspiration. Modern graphic artists are looking at styles popularized in places like the old German magazine, Jugend, which featured fonts that paired psychedelic, amorphous shapes with sharp, fine accents. These new typefaces have thus been dubbed “Jugend-ish.” The inspiration for this movement comes from a rejection of overused fonts, especially in the direct-to-consumer space. Designers are seeking more unique typefaces that are expressive and even a little weird. But the good kind of weird.

An Epic Coding Quest

Introducing a video game, with no cheat codes, that helps you learn how to code. TwilioQuest is a retro-style, 16-bit game that makes coding more fun than a 12-week boot camp. Players control “operators” in-game, who use coding-based tasks to save a fictional universe known as “The Cloud.” This free-to-play game teaches Python, JavaScript, and other coding essentials. It’s available for Mac, PC, and Linux. It’s a great way to get someone interested in coding, and the soundtrack is full of absolute bangers.

Dune Meets Fortnite

The latest pop culture and video game crossover might make you scratch your head and say, “What the Fortnite?” Dune, the high-concept epic fantasy thriller, is coming to Fortnite. Players can unlock Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet skins, and a hoard of other items based on the movie. To be clear, this is a video game collaboration, featuring characters from a movie, all based on a book from the 60s. After the earlier Martin Luther King, Jr. crossover, it seems nothing can escape a Fortnite makeover. We’re just waiting for the next announcement when the State of the Union speech will be delivered via a video game.
